Leandro "Gato" Barbieri (November 28, 1932–2016) was an Argentine tenor saxophonist from Rosario whose fiery, raw tone made him one of the most distinctive voices in Latin jazz. He started out in Lalo Schifrin's orchestra in Buenos Aires, then moved to Europe and New York, where he played in the free jazz scene alongside trumpeter Don Cherry. In the 1970s he went back to his South American roots, blending jazz with tango, folk and Latin rhythms on his acclaimed "Chapter" album series. He reached a wide audience with his Grammy-winning score for Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris and his 1976 hit album Caliente!, which included his much-loved version of Santana's "Europa." With his black fedora, scarf and passionate sound, "El Gato" became an icon whose music still moves audiences today.
