Ozeta and Denzel Benitez-Ortega: POP-SSICAL
A Cuban Mother-Son journey.
Songs and stories about migration, resilience, and joy.

Two powerhouse composers Ozeta and Denzel Benitez-Ortega perform as a lovely duet of mother and son moved by the desire of merging past and present folk traditions and keeping classical music within the rich of communities not elites. Pop meets classical in this innovative creative residency that invites audiences to embrace new approaches to genre. Experience the crossroads at which classical and contemporary composition finds Afro-Cuban traditions presented as art songs. Ozeta's music mixes Afro-Cuban rhythms with funk, pop, bolero, son, samba and other genres. For this particular production, Denzel has rearranged Ozeta's music within the framework of art songs. Denzel’s compositions focus on music as storytelling and expanding audiences’ palette to more experimental harmonic languages. On the last Sunday Ozeta’s band will join to spotlight Ozeta’s album “Alas”.
Ozeta is a Cuban-Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer whose music career has kept her grounded and resilient through the challenges of immigration, single parenting, and post-secondary studies. She holds a Bachelor of Music, a Master of Arts, and a PhD in Cultural Studies. Denzel Benitez-Ortega is a performing pianist/composer currently studying at the University of Western Ontario. He is in 3rd year for a Bachelor's degree in music honouring in composition.
